Getting to Barcelona
The two most common ways to arrive in Barcelona are by train or by plane, depending on your location. The city’s only airport, Aeroport Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat (BCN), is located about 15 kilometers southwest of the city center. Barcelona is also well connected by high-speed rail to the rest of Spain and France. The city's main train station is Barcelona-Sants. You can use platforms like RailEurope.com or theTrainline.com to plan international train and bus trips, as well as travel in Spain. Getting to the city centre
From airport:
- Train (RENFE): R2 Nord from airport Terminal 2B runs every 30 minutes and reaches the city center. A one-way ticket costs €2.65, or you can already purchase and use a 10-ride T-casual ticket (12.55€) for the rest of your stay (see the public transport section for details). The Barcelona-El Clot station is the closest to the Poblenou area, around a 15-minute walk from UPF.
- Metro (TMB): L9 Sud metro line connects the city directly to airport Terminals 1 and 2, with an extra ticket required at the airport stations, and a change to metro line L1 required at Torrassa station. It takes around 40 minutes to Catalunya metro station and 50 to Glories metro station in Poblenou. For a one-way ticket, it costs 5,70€.
- Bus: Line 46 is outside the T1 airport station (one-way ticket 2,65€ or a trip from 10-ride ticket). It takes about 45 minutes and connects to the Espanya Metro Station. Aerobús (A1 and A2): Buse lines operated by a private company that connect to Plaça Espanya and Plaça Catalunya in about 35 minutes. It needs an extra ticket, currently costing 7,45€ one-way or 12,85€ round-trip.

From train station: * After arriving at the Barcelona-Sants station, you can immediately transfer to metro (Line L3 or L5) or FGC trains and continue your trip in the city using a regular public transport ticket (one-way ticket 2.65€ or a trip from 10-ride ticket). The most strightforward to reach Poblenou area is taking the R2 Nord train and stop to the station Barcelona-El Clot.
Public transport
Public transport such as the metro, bus, tram and FGC trains are the quickest, simplest, and most convenient way of getting around Barcelona. You can pay for public transport in 2 different ways:
- By using your contactless debit card, credit card, or phone to purchase a single ride for 2,65€. On the bus or tram you just tap to pay at the front door, and in the Metro, use a ticket machine to purchase the single ticket.
- (Preferred) By using an anonymous rechargeable ticket, called T-casual. You only need to buy for one zone, which covers all public transportation in the city of Barcelona and includes travel to the airport only via RENFE regional train or public bus. It is more economical than buying single tickets, and offers 10 trips for 12,55€ (plus the cost of the rechargeable card, which costs 1€ to obtain). To purchase the tickets, you can use a ticket machine in any metro station and buy the reusable paper ticket. More info here: https://www.tmb.cat/en/barcelona-fares-metro-bus
